Details About The Map

The data for this map is received from the VIIRS sensor on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi-NPP) satellite. The resolution for this sensor is 375 meters. The sensor measures infrared signals received and uses an algorithm to determine if it really is a fire or someting else (like cloud or water). The map is updated every fifteen minutes, and the update times are indicated by the timestamp on the bottom left. On the bottom right is a scale which indicates the Fire Radiative Power (FRP) of the point/location, blue signifies a less intense fire, and yellow indicates a very intense fire.
